McKoy x Banos Story is Getting Bigger and Bigger

YouTube Preview Image

McKoy and Banos did this beautiful train in Singapore and got caught some days ago. I think most of you heard the rumours about it and since today they are true: The person who got caught was pleaded guilty earlier this week to one count each of vandalism and trespassing for breaking into a train depot with an accomplice and drawing graffiti on two subway carriages on May 16.

Exclusive Interview with Robbo: On Banksy, Graffiti and More

There are two sides to every story: Robbo talks exclusively to Juxtapoz about graffiti, his ongoing feud with Banksy, and his return to the art world.

I ordered a Budweiser and anxiously looked at my mobile. It was 7:50pm on a Friday night and Robbo has agreed to meet me at the Princess of Wales pub in Primrose Hill, London*. This friendly little pub was filled to the rafters with people who had gathered to watch the world cup on the two TV screen at either end of the bar. I didn’t have a good view of the entrance so I grabbed my drink and went outside where I was quickly joined by Robbo – a huge stature of a man with shaved head, a white ‘Team Robbo’ tee-shirt which he had designed himself, shorts and trainers. I spent the next few hours learning more about this old school graffiti legend who has been thrust back into the spotlight.

STENCIL KING – HUGO KAAGMAN

STENCIL KING

On Saturday November 28th, Hugo Kaagman wil officially present and sign the book Stencil King at The American Book Center Amsterdam. The book is a representation of the total scope of his works. During the signingsession, Diana Ozon will read from her works and talk about her memories with Kaagman. Signing from 15:00-17:00.

On Sunday November 29th the official presentation of Stencil King takes place in the artKitchen Gallery. During the presentation Rob Scholte will share his views upon Kaagman’s works and his entire oeuvre can be seen. Presentation starts at 17:00.

Hugo Kaagman was born in 1955 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. He started graffiti in 1969 and stencil in 1977. Until 1985 Hugo was very active as a graffiti artist in the centre of Amsterdam. In his first period, he created murals through stencil and spray by hand and using various elements of punk and reggae culture. He developed a very own and unique graffiti-style. In his works, Kaagman tries to express his worries about the multicultural society, on Western and non-Western cultures clashing and bonding in the Netherlands. He displays an ironic commentary on politics and the society of today.

After initially having sought his inspiration elsewhere, he discovered Holland and developed his own contemporary version of Delft blue tiles. His workspace is located in what used to be a kiosk on Amsterdam RAI Station. The work he makes and exhibits over there provokes, is humouristic and on edge.

Thanks to the combination of exquisite photographic material and texts from Tristan Manco (among others), Stencil King has become a complete and unique chronologic display of the artistic career and godfather of Dutch graffiti art, Hugo Kaagman.

From Style Writing to Art, Magda Danysz Paris

From Style Writing to Art

Group Exhibition with Seen, Crash, Quik, Jonone, Blek Le Rat, Obey, Miss Van, West, Space invader, Zevs, Futura, Blade. On the occasion of the publication of the book From Style Writing to Art: A street art anthology. Opening October 24th at Magda Danysz’ art gallery Paris.

Proud to fight for the recognition of Graffiti and Street Art as a major artistic movement, Magda Danysz publishes this fall an anthology about the History of this key artistic movement (388 pages, 200 illustrations, published by Drago and MnA Publishing).

The works of Seen, Crash, Quik or Blade show the historic sources of the street art. From the 70s they sprayed their names on the subways or walls of New York. Today, they are considered as the pioneers of this movement, the “Kings” as they were named back then. The 80s and 90s generation, embodied by Jonone, West, Miss Van, Space Invader or JR shows diversity in street art. These different ways of expression are the testimony of a real transition
from the Style Writing to an artistic manifestation. Among them, Jonone was one of the first ones to choose to express himself on canvas from 1991. Concerning Space Invader, he distances himself with use of the mosaic for instance.
